From Tate Britain, comes the socially-significant art exhibit, “Life Between Islands: Caribbean-British Art 1950s-Now,” to the Art Gallery of Ontario until April 1, 2024. Art displaying Black Power and the Black Arts Movement, arising from the culture of the diaspora from the migration from the Caribbean islands to the British isles. Immigration to Britain has been fuelled by former British colonies, due to the act specifying that citizens from former colonies were allowed to migrate and abode in Britain. Uniquely, the British Parliament countered this act for Hong Kong Passport holders due to the Parliamentarians’ fear of 6 million Hong Kong citizens aboding in Britain after Britain handed back Hong Kong to China in 1997. “Life Between Islands” reveals, through art, the culture, discrimination and the socio-political issues affecting the Caribbean diaspora in Britain.
